Ceramics students experiment with Raku firing

Gabby Rabianski, Staff Writer

On Thursday, Oct. 27 and Friday, Oct. 28, Ms. Bumber’s Ceramics students welcomed Carl Mankert, a Raku firing specialist, to transform their pieces into beautiful works of art through a unique process called Raku firing. Raku firing consists of firing clay at a high temperature and then transferring it to a closed bin where it will interact with combustible materials; every piece comes out different than the last.

Ms. Bumber said, “I love the experience. This year has been exceptionally interactive and more kids were able to get involved.” Students filled bins with newspaper and moved their pieces from the kiln to initiate the process and get involved.

Both Mrs. Wing and Ms. Bumber hope to continue bringing in professionals and exposing students to art outside of the classroom. Bumber said, “I have been a part of the process for the last two years and hope to continue Raku firing for years to come.”
