Senioritis peaks as school year progresses

78 percent of students claim to have it, but is it real?

Senioritis is defined as “a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance.”

Guidance counselor Mrs. Andrea Heinz said, “As second semester progresses, there seems to be more missing and late assignments due to procrastination.”

Seniors seem to “check out” of high school after spring break. With the weather getting warmer as students approach summer, motivation decreases as the excitement to move on after high school increases.

Senioritis is not a real “diagnosis” but more of a mentality.

Heinz said “Students who are more involved in school seem to not suffer as much from senioritis because they have activities that keep them invested in high school, such as sports and clubs.”
