‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ makes waves in box office, grosses over two billion worldwide
February 7, 2023
After 13 years, the first “Avatar” sequel has finally been released. While the original film announced sequels were being made not long after it was released, director James Cameron spent almost seven years writing the multiple sequels to the film resulting in the sequels being released long after the original.
The third movie has already been filmed and the fourth is currently in production. “Avatar: The Way of Water” uniquely simultaneously filmed the second and third film to prevent much change in the ages of the young actors between movies.
The sequels are set to release every two years starting in 2022, to be followed by three more films (that we know of).
“Avatar: The Way of Water” stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, as well as many up-and-coming young actors. It also features Oscar winner Kate Winslet, best known for her role in another film by James Cameron, “Titanic”.
The film is a little over three hours long, and quite frankly it did not need three hours to feel completed. The movie follows the journey of Jake Sully and his family as they try to keep the world of Pandora and their native people, the Na’vi, safe from the “Sky People”, aka humans.
In the film the Sullys’ leave their home with the Omatikayan people (or the Forest Na’vi) and join the Metkayina clan (the Ocean Na’vi). They are pursued by the Avatar version of Colonel Miles Quaritch, whose human body was killed in the previous movie by the Sullys’.
While the original “Avatar” is the highest grossing movie of all time, many people doubted the second film would be a success due to the lack of following of the original film. However, they were proven wrong since the film has now grossed over two billion dollars.
The ending was very interesting and definitely the best part of the movie. The setting of the movie looked amazing, the world of Pandora was brought to life. It mainly took place in either the water or a forest and the CGI looks super realistic thanks to the cutting edge technology Cameron is known for experimenting with in his films.
Overall, in an age where technology can sometimes feel like it can not be improved any more, Cameron managed to astound audiences around the world with the realism displayed in the film.
