There is not a better way to start spirit week than with a heated competition between the bold barbeque dads and sassy soccer moms. Students showed their spirit with aprons, mustaches and grilling equipment along with oversized glasses, fanny packs and athletic wear. With the week in full swing, there were a total of 713 students dressed up the first day with the seniors taking first and freshmen taking close second.
“I think it’s actually crazy impressive that freshmen are racking up these points, but the upperclassmen seem to always have the upper hand,” sophomore Matthew Schmitt said.
Along with the divide between classes to earn the most points and take first place, there was also a divide between the moms and dads. The day saw many barbecue dads and soccer moms, but the barbecue dads seemed to be the students’ favorite.
“I feel like barbecue dads [were better] because soccer mom outfits are so common around the school, especially like [Lululemon] and all that. So it was cool to see the girls, and guys, dressing up in barbecue dad outfits,” junior Nicole Russell said.
In addition to the amazing outfits, there were also skits before the school day began, which awarded an extra 40 points for seniors and 20 points for juniors.
“The skits always make spirit week exciting,” Schmitt said. “I felt like the theme was hard to incorporate into a skit, but everyone did well.”
While there was debate about the best skit many still agreed the theme was a good start to the week. Although the theme was memorable, many thought the theme was too similar to themes of years before that included the “versus” aspect of dressing up. For example, last year we had a country versus country club day.
“I think it could be a better theme but it’s also a good theme and this is the more appropriate one for our school,” senior Jonah Kulaga said.
Students closed off the day sharing their outfits and enjoying the beginning of one of the most anticipated weeks of the school year.
