It is the time of the year when students select classes for the upcoming school year. However, with the many electives offered, it is hard to be aware of everything available to you and make the best choices.
Interning classes are options many students are unaware of. They are offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors, depending on the specific internship. Some interning classes offered include Cave, ELL, tech, Special Education and Freshman Academy. There is also the Professional Internship Program and the Business Internships and Career Training class.
The Professional Internship Program is where students can find internship opportunities outside of school in a field of interest and fulfill their school credit simultaneously.
The Business Internships and Career Training class is different from the Wilco opportunities students have. For Wilco, students take a class and can earn certifications and get jobs depending on the class in addition to credits.
However, for Business Internships and Career Training, students have to work 15 hours a week, but are released early to go to work. Students work wherever they would like and earn school credit and a grade for this class which is given by your supervisor/manager based on your performance.
“The benefits include gaining hands-on experience in the chosen field and establishing valuable connections that may lead to future job opportunities,” counselor Stephanie Bushnell said.
Regardless of which interning class you take, interns gain practical knowledge and skills that will be helpful in the future.
If you are interested in taking one of the interning opportunities offered, simply talk to your counselor or teachers. Whether you chose to intern in or outside of school, the opportunity is not to be taken for granted.
