After teaching for 35 years, mathematics teacher Kathy Young is preparing to begin a new chapter. The 2023-24 school year was Young’s final year of teaching before retirement. Young began her career at LHS in August of 1989 and soon after became the Mathematics Department Chair and has remained in that position ever since.
Young has made various memories throughout her teaching career, but one particular memory stands out and shows how much change has taken place since the start of her career.
“To take attendance, every Monday we would start with 5 strips of paper [labeled] Monday through Friday. [Each day] you would tear off the day… circle the people that were absent and you would clip it [to the door],” Young said. “[Then] students would walk by and get them and turn [it] into the main office. I can’t believe it actually worked but it did.”
After all her years of teaching, advice she has for students regarding math is to always try. It may not be easy at first, but it will get better. Without trying, it is not possible to succeed in math.
As for retirement, Young has some ideas in store for what she plans to do.
“[Mr. Young and I] love this town of Lemont and we want to enjoy that, but we do want to [travel],” Young said. “We have a very long list of places we want to go visit.”
We wish Young the best in her retirement and thank her for all she has done here at LHS.
