Slammin’ poetry
November 24, 2015
The Poetry Slam held on November 12 in the Commons was a brilliant success. Organized by English teacher Sara Armbrecht with huge help from students Kevin Troy and Julissa Nunez , this event was created to bring students together to listen to, as well as perform, many poems, whether it be original or from another author. Proceeds benefited LHS English Honors Society.
Many students, including myself, performed poems that came straight from the heart and kept the audience right at the edge of their seats. All the poets had amazing emotion which made their poems come to life in the eyes of the audience.
Let’s not forget the incredible MC’s Sami Schoell and Justin Haase, who kept the audience laughing at extremely cheesy jokes in between each performer.
The Poetry Slam had a very good turnout with 16 performers, including a surprise poet, Patrick Troy (Kevin’s dad), and 68 attendees. One of the amazing performers and one of TomTom’s own, Megan Atherton, was speechless about the event. “Yay! Poetry!” was the only thing she seemed to be able to say.
After spending some time with Mrs. Armbrecht, I was curious as to how the journey of setting up the slam as well as how she thought it turned out. “It was total chaos that transformed into poetic beauty,” she exclaimed.
With the lights, food, soft music and amazing poets, I think it’s safe to say that next year I will definitely be attending again, and so should you.
