On Sept, 8 the Chicago Bears had an astonishing comeback over the Tennessee Titans.
The Bears came back from a 17-0 deficit in the third quarter. Shockingly, The Bears’ offense wasn’t the leading factor to the win; instead, it was the defense.
Even though the defense let up 17 points in the first half, they held the Titans to 0 unanswered points in the second half. This included a blocked punt by defensive end Darnell Taylor, which was recovered by the Bears, returned for a Touchdown by safety Jonathan Owens and a 43-yard pick-6 from cornerback Tyrique Stevenson.
However, the Bears offense struggled throughout the game, as Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, had high expectations coming into his rookie debut.
Against the Titans, Williams threw for 93 yards, 0 touchdowns, 0 fumbles, 0 interceptions and had a 48.3% completion rate. Williams is the first QB who has been drafted No. 1 overall to win his first start since Derek Carr in 2002.
Numerous people had something to say about the Bears’ defensive performance this week.
“It did take a half for the unit to make some corrections, but once head coach Matt Ebeflus identified the adjustments that needed to be made, the defense dominated. On seven Titans’ offensive possessions, Tennessee failed to score in the second half, turned the ball over four times (including the blocked punt) and was limited to just 62 total yards,” Chicago sports journalist Nicholas Moreano said on the All CHGO website.
Going on to the second week, the Bears will attempt to improve their record to 2-0 against the Houston Texans, led by QB C.J Stroud. An exciting match-up between two young upcoming stars, Williams and Stroud, can be expected. The Bears aim to continue their six-game win streak, carrying on from preseason, and defeat the Houston Texans team who made it to the divisional round of the playoffs last year.
