Homecoming spirit week proves to be an annual success as students and staff come together to celebrate the spirit of Lemont High School through friendly competition. This year, classes were awarded spirit points throughout Homecoming week if students participated in dress-up days, skits, fundraisers, Homecoming banners and Class Color Day games.
On Sept. 27 during the Blue and Gold Day assembly, the class with the most points and the overall winners of Homecoming week were announced.
With 1,485 points, the freshmen came in fourth place. In third place, the sophomores had 1,622 points. In second place, the juniors had 1,742 points and the seniors took first place with 2,170 points.
“[The juniors] were close with the sophomores [the whole week], I’m super glad we beat them this year,” junior Matthew Schmitt said.
The week started off strong with the seniors having a 78 spirit point lead ahead the sophomores who were neck-and-neck with the juniors with only a one point difference between the two grades. The rest of the week remained in a similar situation, the freshmen were in last with the seniors in first, with the sophomores and juniors racing for the second place spot.
According to the LHS Homecoming 2024 website, the sophomores gained 120 spirit points through skits, the juniors gained 70 spirit points and the seniors gained 105 spirit points, while the freshmen gained zero points for skits overall.
Along with the spirit points obtained through skits, multiple fundraisers offered spirit points through any donations given during the week. The gift card drive raised $840 for the LHS Food Bank with the juniors taking first place donating $270 worth of gift cards, earning them 100 spirit points. The juniors also won first place raising $582 for charity Cal’s Angels, obtaining another 100 spirit points.
Another competitive way the classes earned spirit points was through designing Homecoming banners. Each class decorated the banner with football aspects and followed the “Nashville Nights” theme of this year’s Homecoming dance. The freshmen came in fourth with 10 points, the sophomores in third with 20 points, the juniors in second with 35 points and the seniors took first place with 50 points.
As seniors took home the victory and the other classes celebrated their own successes, the results of Homecoming week show the dedication and spirit each class has and what activities each class excels in.
“Homecoming week is the best part of Homecoming,” Schmitt said. “It’s cool to see how the classes work together and [I think] the results really show that.”
