Set to release “Avengers: Doomsday” on May 1, 2026, Marvel has started to release more information about the characters being featured in the film, sparking conversations amongst fans on possible storylines. Here are some of my favorite theories:
Doctor Doom is a variant of Tony Stark:
As the Multiverse Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) begins to close, Marvel has completely stepped away from the storyline with main villain Kang the Conqueror. Marvel has replaced Kang the Conqueror with villain Victor Von Doom, played by actor Robert Downey Jr. This is a controversial casting as Downey famously played Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man. Some fans believe that Dr. Doom could possibly be an evil version of Iron Man. If Dr. Doom is a variant of Tony Stark, Marvel could really lean into the ending of the MCU plotlines, especially with emotional interactions between characters that knew Stark previously. There are also similarities in both characters, specifically related to their armor and being known for their scientific intelligence. There are endless possibilities of what Marvel could do with the character and his relation with others, making for a very interesting watch.
Doctor Doom destroys the multiverse:
In the most recent “Secret Wars” comic book storyline, Dr. Doom destroyed the multiverse with multiple incursions. He does so by stealing power from the Beyonders in order to reshape all of existence into a single realm called Battleworld that frightenedly accepts Dr. Doom as their leader. It seems as though instead of including Battleworld in the movies, Marvel has instead called it the Void. Fans speculate that Dr. Doom could accomplish what Cassandra Nova couldn’t and destroy all of existence to create a world that worships him. This would be even more devastating than Thanos’ snap at the end of “Avengers: Infinity War,” but would also be a perfect set-up for the sequel “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
Scarlet Witch is the ultimate “anchor being”:
The Scarlet Witch, also known as Wanda Maximoff, is arguably one of the most powerful MCU characters. Wanda has unimaginable power in chaos magic and mind control. She is thought to be killed in “Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness,” but fans have learned that death doesn’t stop Marvel from bringing characters back. The idea of “anchor beings” was introduced in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and is when a character is so significant in their timeline that their deaths destroy the timeline. If these “anchor beings” are the movie version of Nexus Beings from the comics, that would make Wanda the “anchor being” for the Sacred Timeline. It is hard to believe that producers and writers would just walk away from such a complex and powerful character. Wanda could possibly be a target for Dr. Doom due to her power, fulfilling the prophecy said by Wong how she will “either rule or annihilate the cosmos.”
