Over the summer, Lemont High School underwent serious renovations involving the science department. The students of LHS saw these new improvements on their first day of school in August.
Angela Duensing, Co-Chair of CPEC (Classroom Physical Environment Committee), has been involved in the renovation process and gave us some insight into what the renovation has been like.
“[CPEC] wanted to get things done before the beginning of the school year and it didn’t happen completely, but the major bit of the renovation did,” Duensing said.
The second floor of LHS has been “modernized.” These new changes include new science labs, flooring and murals. Along the walls of the hallway, several tables have been set up with outlets for students to utilize as a workspace, replacing the lockers that once lined the hallways.
“Before school you’ll start to see kids hanging out in those spaces,” Duensing said. “That’s the goal.”
Duensing also spoke of her colleague, Erin Horan, about how she has been a principal aspect of this project.
“[Horan] was here at least once a week over the summer just checking in on the rooms,” Duensing said. “She helped move all the science teachers out of their rooms and back into their rooms.”
Over the next couple of years, LHS hopes to turn into a new and improved learning environment that is accessible and engaging for all students.
