Beginning the 25-2026 school year, Lemont High School has implemented new artificial intelligence (AI) usage expectations for classroom use. The LHS technology committee has been actively working to get a sturdy foundation for AI use in the classroom.
LHS has based some of their expectations off of pioneering colleges in the Chicagoland area that are also starting to address AI usage.
“[LHS] needed clear guidelines for, not only students but for staff as well,” technology committee member Marek Dron said.
Currently, the main goals for AI usage at LHS is to get staff as educated on the subject as possible and then be able to to teach this new technology to students.
“I think it’s important for folks reading this article to know that [nobody] in the building is claiming to be an AI expert,” technology committee member Matthew Doherty said.
There is a lot to consider and weigh when it comes to AI. Currently, LHS staff is trying to find a middle ground to be able to teach students how AI can be used effectively while also being aware of ways it can be misused.
“Nobody has the absolute answer for what exactly the role of AI should be in education, [however] I know ignoring it is not an option at all,” Dron said.
The main purpose of these new expectations is to help deepen student learning and create productive students for the future.
“We just want to make sure that we are still at its core, creating lifelong, independent learners and productive citizens in a rapidly changing world,” Doherty said. “And that our students are prepared for the world they’re about to face, which AI is going to be part of.”
