Snow flurries bury Chicago White Sox’s home opener
Players slammin’ in the slush
April 25, 2018
The first pitch of the White Sox’s home opener was thrown at 3:10 p.m on April 6, by starting pitcher A.J. Pierzynski. Unfortunately, the White Sox took a loss against the Detroit Tigers. The game went into a tenth inning with the final score being 9-7.
The Sox were ahead by three runs in the third inning. However Detroit began to make a comeback when player Niko Goodrum hit a two run homer to keep the game going, causing the team to build off of that to continue their rally.
Playing a game outside in sub 30 degree weather with snowfall did not stop the Sox from making some tremendous plays. Yolmer Sanchez brought three runs home, raising the score to 6-3 in the fifth inning. Starting pitcher, James Shields jumped out into a 3-1 lead against the Detroit Tigers.
“I’ve always been a big White Soxs fan since I was a little kid. This is is probably a rebuilding year, but we have a bunch of new guys and hopefully it will become a great team and make the playoffs. We’ve always been a south sider. Win or lose, the fans are always supporting and always hope for the best,” said junior Maggie O’brien.
Detroit third baseman, Nicholas Castellanos hit a single and was later brought home on a double to tie the game at seven runs.
“I am a huge Soxs fan. I was raised a fan since I was super little because my dad is a die-hard fan, but ever since then, going to baseball games has been one of my favorite things to do over the summer. In my opinion, baseball season is the best season,” said junior Maddy Horn.
The White Sox were not able to bounce back so the Tigers took the lead. Castellanos scored an RBI and locked up the game.
Despite a tough loss under harsh weather conditions, the Chicago White Soxs should be proud they came out slugging the ball and had a good outing from their starting pitcher for the first five innings. However, unfortunately the bullpen could not hold the Tigers back.
