“Donda” by: Ye West, is it worth the hype? Or is it a flop?

William Tarazi, Staff Writer

“Donda” is Ye West’s 10th studio album he has ever made. He is also believed to have one of the best discography out of any current rapper.

“Donda” became number one on the billboard almost as soon as it came out. This will make him even more legendary because every single one of his albums have gone number one.

“Donda” has been hyped up for so long, until he finally revealed the release date. But everyone was disappointed because it was supposed to be released three times, finally after 18 months of Ye working on it, he finally dropped it.

Everyone was very surprised when it was released. It was unexpected as well as it came out at 12 a.m.on Aug. 29, 2021.

“Donda” included many huge feature artists, such as: Playboi Carti, Fivo Foreign, The Weekend, Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Pop Smoke, Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Lil Yachty, Don Toliver, Young Thug, Baby Keem, and many other smaller artists.

This album is for sure not his best work, but it was experimental. Ye used great production, made very solid hits, and it was actually dedicated to his mother.

His mother, Donda West, is what the project is named after. Most of his songs are dedicated to his mom that he had a deep connection to. The first song on his album was “Donda Chant”, it is an audio of a person repeating the words “Donda”, but was later known as his mom’s last heartbeats.

This album’s most popular songs are, “Off the Grid”, “Moon, Praise God”, and “Hurricane.” These songs feature many mainstream artists, such as: Playboi Carti, Kid Cudi, The weekend, Fivo Foreign, Baby Keem, and Travis Scott.

“Donda” might have not been the hype everyone hoped for, but it is not his worst project. This album showed the love and faith he had for his mother and God.

This album also showed how good his production can be. His lyrics were very appealing and very upstanding.

The weirdest thing about “Donda” was the listening parties and how he was living before the album came out. Ye has held these parties at different stadiums like Soldier Field and Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta where he was originally born.

These listening parties held full stadiums, while some kind of church was in the middle of the stadium which he came out of. It also featured many pictures of his mother before it all started.

But, Mercedes Benz Stadium is a little more special. He had actually been living in this stadium as he was recording songs that would be on the album.

Another weird thing is he would be wearing a bulletproof vest while wearing weird masks in his room which he slept in. He also had security around him at all times.

This caused many people to end up confused and actually pretty upset. After all of this waiting, they think he was just trying to stall. The fans began to get angry as well because he had been lying about the drop dates and he wasn’t releasing the album.

Overall, “Donda” is actually a very important project of his career. It shows his love for his mother and how good his production, and lyricism could be. I would give this album a 7/10 and I would really recommend you to listen to this project.

This album is nothing incredibly special or worth the hype, but the meaning behind it is what makes it a lot better.
