Two teams go head-to-head in an intense game of tug of war. “I definitely like this better, regular gym just wouldn’t be fun this week,” said sophomore April Rice.

Gym teachers have introduced new activities in honor of the exciting HOCO week. Despite this being the first year of doing this, the games became popular with students rather quickly.

“I think it is a lot more fun doing the different events, it’s better this year then class was last year, there is a lot more school spirit,” said sophomore gym student, Anicka Herout.

This year, the gym staff members came up with fun, new activities for students. With these daily activities, students also came up with teams and a group name to go along with it, bringing classmates together.

“I think it’s a great way to not only get students to come together as a class but come together as an entire high school,” said PE staff member, Tracy Rainey.

Each day students participated in three different activities that were previously planned by the PE staff. On day one, students played football, eclipse ball and went through an obstacle course. On day two, students played eclipse volleyball, tug of war and went through another obstacle course. G day students had an extra day of gym and ended off with a dodgeball tournament.

“Collectively as a PE staff we came up with the best options, we knew we wanted to do three activities everyday, we saw tug of war was really popular so we wanted to do that. The obstacle course was something that coach Delude took under her wing and she created it,” said Rainey.

Winners of each class period got to take a picture with a trophy and received candy prizes. The PE staff hopes to possibly incorporate some different prizes in the future.

“Maybe as time grows and we get a little bit more seasoned in what we’re doing, maybe we can incorporate spirit points to classes and somehow integrate it not only just for PE but also what students do for homecoming week,” said Rainey.

Despite there only being one group that comes out on top per class period, students were happy to participate and enjoy their HOCO week with their friends.

“It’s nice to choose your own team and just have fun with the people you chose, but if you lose it doesn’t matter, it’s just fun.” said Herout.
