Preppin’ for college

With the summer only a little more than four months away, no group of students are more excited than the seniors. After four long, yet surprisingly fast, years, most seniors have their sights set on college.

For most of the year the talk amongst the senior class has been about the stress and anxiety of college admissions and where everyone will end up. Now, however, decisions are starting to roll in and more and more people have decided where they will be studying for the next four or more years.

Many kids are staying home and attending community college, while others are going to all corners of the country to further their education.

One thing I’ve found to be a constant idea expressed by seniors is that, although everyone’s somber and will miss the memories they made with their high school friends, most are still excited for a fresh start, a new change of scenery, and the prospect of meeting new people and friends.

With all due respect to Lemont, it’s a small town and it’s very difficult not to know all the people we have been going to school with for a big part of our lives. Some people are excited for fresh faces and a new group of friends.

In fact the process of finding a new roommate has been a fun experience for a lot of seniors as many find it comparable to what online dating might be like. Talking about yourself and seeing if you can find a match with a person that you will live with for possibly four plus years.

Some find an independent life more appealing. They like, although a bad habit, to miss a class without being marked as truant. Students like being able to create their schedule more freely and having only a few classes a day or sometimes no classes. They like that finally after 13 long years of primary and secondary education they can finally take classes more specialized to their desired career field.

Of course these students are aware that college isn’t all fun and games. It can and most likely will be more strenuous than anything they experienced in high school.

College is such a cool thing because it allows kids to really focus on the things they love while allowing them to live almost completely on their own and gain valuable self autonomy skills in the process.
