Is “Maid” the move to make?

Gabriella Estrada, Staff Writer

The new hit series “Maid” launched on Netflix on Oct. 1, 2021, and has been on Netflix’s infamous top 10 list since. Rated TV-MA, the show follows Alex, played by Margaret Qually, a young and newly single mother who has just left her abusive boyfriend, played by Nick Robinson. We watch Alex as she navigates her way through the corrupt system and many other struggles throughout the 10 episode series. “Maid” is actually based on a book, written by Stephanie Lane, who tells her story and many others’.

Both the author and producers have done an amazing job to shine some much needed light on domestic violence, and other “touchy” subjects. The audience can assume the title “Maid” came from the position Alex has received, as a maid. The job doesn’t pay well and even finds Alex getting into financial trouble rather than helping her out, however she continues to push through for Maddy, Alex’s three year old daughter.

As I sat watching, my emotions spiraled with each episode. When I finally finished the series I thought to myself, how was it really? It was great, I cried, and laughed and even felt pretty angry at times, it pulled on my heart strings a lot, and I even found myself relating to Alex at some points. The show was written wonderfully, however the flaw I continually saw was how Alex was never angry at Maddy. She never acted out of anger, she never yelled, and she never hit. You would think given her circumstances, and being a young first time, and now single mother she may have done those things, but Alex is extremely calm and patient with Maddy. Not to mention Maddy did great on her part of rarely throwing tantrums, or fits, she didn’t talk back or ever hit, she was nearly the perfect child, which is quite irritating as those things are so common upon children her age. This could be because of the abuse, and fear Alex felt as a child, which we found out through flashbacks of her childhood. Alex may have not wanted to put her daughter through the things she went through as a child and decided to never hit or yell at Maddy, and in return, her child was an angel. Alex still goes through many obstacles, and emotions and tries her best to fight through it, but will she make it out? Will she beat the generational cycles of abuse? Will she be a good mother? Will she give up?

This show is all around a great binge worthy show that can last you some time considering each episode is anywhere from 45-60 minutes long. It will make you cry, especially if you’re a baby like me, but it will also make you smile. I recommend Maid, to whoever needs a new show.
