One of the most unique things about Homecoming week is the time-honored tradition of each class creating a banner to represent their grade. Each year during homecoming season, class officers get together to create a banner that incorporates the elements of the theme for the Homecoming dance and the Homecoming football game. These banners hang proudly over the main staircase for all during Homecoming week. The banners are then judged by faculty members.

“It’s a nice sense of school spirit,” says Ryan Hennebry, 10-year freshman class sponsor. “You walk into the entryway of the school and [the banners] add something that isn’t there all year. It shows a little bit of school pride.”
Hennebry enjoys being the freshman class sponsor in particular, finding value in watching new students blossom.

“They come into school a little bit timid and shy, and it’s great to get them off on the right foot. You meet with them and you kind of talk to them about our traditions,” he said.
Junior class sponsor Ann Rodriguez-Baltrum also gets excited when the class banner competition comes around every year.

“It’s interesting to see what the students can come up with,” said Rodriguez-Baltrum. “[The banner] was a group effort with all of the junior class representatives. We put out a whole bunch of ideas, put them on the board, and saw what stuck and what everybody liked the best.”
Junior class officer Daria Koslosky enjoyed working hard with her classmates to create the junior class banner.

“We started by sketching out our ideas and all worked together to create our idea,” said Koslosky. “We started buying materials and it was just really great. It was really just a group effort. It was really fun to get together in the mornings, work together as a group, and see it in the hallway now.”
This year, the senior banner came in fourth with 10 points, the junior banner came in third with 20 points, and the freshman banner came in second with 35 points. The sophomore banner trumped all this year, coming in first place with 50 points.
