Every year, Spotify, the music streaming app, releases what is known as “Spotify Wrapped.” This is where Spotify takes the music that you listen to during the year, specifically from Jan. 1 to around mid November, and records the songs you listen to the most, albums, artists, number of minutes you’ve listened to music, podcasts and more.
Spotify Wrapped was originally created in 2015 called “Your Year in Music” and was rebranded a year later to the now known “Spotify Wrapped.” Now, Spotify releases this review annually, leaving listeners eager towards the release of their Spotify rundown.
Sometime during the month of December is usually when they are released to Spotify users. This year, there were some changes towards the usual Spotify Wrapped. This includes having a fake race or “sprint” towards your top artist of the year, a quiz to find out your top song of the year, your listening age based on when the songs were released and assigning you to a group.
The group assignments are given to each Spotify listener based on the “vibe” of the type of songs that they listened to during the year. According to Spotify, “Your Club captures the emotional qualities of your year in music. That includes the moods, genres, and musical terms that defined what you listened to most.” This specific section is called the Listening Club.
For example, the group that I was put into was called “Full Charge Crew”. My club is described as an “endless party” and they have “high energy, zero chill.” The other clubs that Spotify created were, Cloud State, Soft Hearts Club, Grit Collective, Cosmic Stereo Club and Club Serotonin.
Along with the group assigning, you are also given a role for your club. My role was “Collector” and has a description of “you often save music to your library, building a large club collection,” according to Spotify. Some of these other roles include, Leader, Scout, Archivist, Curator, Recruiter, Broadcaster, Specialist, Loyalist and Supporter. Each person is given a description of what their role means towards how they listen to and organize their music.
These annual releases always bring controversy to the table about what listeners’ top songs, top albums or top artists actually are. I too believe my top songs are slightly different from what was given to me, however it must be taken into consideration when this data is collected.
Overall, the Spotify Wrapped release is always a fun and interesting way to view your music taste during the long year.
