After months of essays, deadlines and refreshing the Common App way too many times, seniors finally hit “submit”. Then, the panic sets in. Now what? Even though the applications are out of your hands, the college process isn’t over yet. Here’s what students should expect in the weeks and months after applying.
- Track your portals
Once colleges receive your application, they’ll send instructions to access an applicant portal. This is where you’ll find checklists, missing documents and eventually your admissions decision. Log in regularly. Some schools won’t notify you by email if something is incomplete. - Send required documents
Make sure your counselor has submitted mid-year grades, transcripts and any other materials colleges request. If you’re applying for specific programs, you may need to complete additional forms or auditions. Missing paperwork can delay your entire application. - Keep your grades steady
Senioritis may be calling, but colleges can (and do) rescind offers if your academic performance drops dramatically. Your second-semester transcript still matters, especially for competitive or selective programs. - Watch your email like a hawk
Colleges will reach out about interviews, scholarship opportunities or extra materials they need. Respond quickly. Deadlines don’t disappear after you apply. - Apply for financial aid
Complete the FAFSA as soon as possible and check whether your schools require the CSS Profile. The earlier these forms are submitted, the better your chances at receiving aid. - Visit (or revisit) campuses
As decisions start rolling in, visit schools you’re seriously considering. Many colleges offer admitted-student days in the spring, which can help you compare programs and get a feel for the campus community. - Prepare for decisions
Most regular-decision results arrive between March and April. Whether you get an acceptance, denial or waitlist, remember that one decision does not define your future. Plenty of paths lead to success.
The application may be submitted, but your journey isn’t over. Stay organized, stay patient and stay confident! The next chapter is closer than you think.
